Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to give Huawei a limited role in the UK

The UK government is expected to make a decision tomorrow on whether they will ban Huawei 5G equipment according to several reports.

According to a report from the Financial Times, London is expected to grant Huawei a limited 5G role for core networks.

This comes despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson facing increasing pressure from US delegates to impose a full-scale ban on Huawei technology.

Last week, government officials proposed allowing Huawei to have a limited role in its 5G networks, against advice from the US who said using Huawei’s 5G technology would be ‘madness’.

The US has insisted that the Chinese company poses a risk to national security and threatens UK-US intelligence sharing.

One US representative reportedly telling Mr. Johnson that using 5G networks “would be like putting Russia in charge of anti-doping of world athletes”.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who also supports a full ban on Huawei networks tweeted on Sunday evening that the UK had a “momentous decision” to take on 5G amid further attempts from Washington to sway the UK away from allowing Huawei 5G networks.

Mr. Johnson is now looking at imposing a market share cap on Huawei, as he looks to avoid over-reliance on the Chinese tech firm.

Huawei has repeatedly denied claims that they had previously cooperated with the Chinese government to implement “back doors” into its technology.

In an earlier statement, a Huawei spokesperson said: “We are confident that the UK government will make a decision based upon evidence, as opposed to unsubstantiated allegations.”
