Former trading director at Phones 4U takes over from Peter Hubbard, who left the distributor last week

Tech Data Mobile has appointed former Phones 4u director of trading Matt Child as its new UK managing director.

Last week, Mobile News exclusively revealed Peter Hubbard was to leave the distributor after four years as part of an internal cost-cutting drive and restructure. Sources close to the situation suggested Child would replace him.

The new MD spent two-and-a-half years at Phones 4u before its collapse last September and had previously been sales director at 20:20 Mobile Group for more than five years. Most recently he was chief operating officer at Leeds United Football Club.

Child said: “Having had several opportunities to return to mobile it was important for me to join the right business. Tech Data Mobile is uniquely positioned to enable and support the market in addressing the massive opportunities around product supply, lifecycle services and mobile integration.

“With an extensive range of Windows, Android and iOS platforms, along with significant stock-holding and advanced logistics capabilities, we have an unrivalled opportunity to not only continue to develop its existing customer base but to engage and deliver new customers to the UK business.”

Tech Data UK and Ireland managing director Andy Gass said Child’s “extensive experience” in the sector and business management means he is well placed to lead the company through the next phase of its growth and development.

The latest reshuffle at Tech Data Mobile comes following the departure of vice president for services Richard Baxendale last month, who left the distributor after more than seven years, again exclusively revealed by Mobile News.
