Ofcom slaps True Telecom with £300,000 fine for breached rules

Ofcom issued the fine after analysing 250 sales call recordings in a year long investigation

True Telecom has been fined £300,000 by regulatory body Ofcom after being found guilty of mis-selling landline telephone services to over a hundred customers.

Ofcom stated the dealer broke four rules repeatedly from October 8, 2015 to October 26 the following year.

It came to its decision after analysing 250 sales call recordings, where it heard True Telecom engage in:

  • Slamming – customer phone services were transferred to True Telecom without their knowledge
  • Repeating transfer orders despite customers cancelling
  • Entering 35 customers into banned 36-month long contracts
  • Failing to keep and retain records of consent; True Telecom did not have proof of consent to switch to the company for 21 customers

In addition to the fine True Telecom is being ordered to reimburse affected customers, and release them from contracts without penalty.

Sales staff have to be re-trained and make all necessary changes to policies and procedures. Current customers will continue to receive services from True Telecom.

The Dartford-based dealer went into administration this month after being fined £80,000 by the Information Commissioner’s Office.
