GSMA appoints MTN Group CEO Ralph Mupita as deputy chair until 2026

Ralph Mupita, Group President and CEO of South Africa network MTN, has been appointed Deputy Chair of the GSMA Board for the remainder of the current term, which runs until the end of 2026.

Vivek Badrinath, Director General of the GSMA, said:

Mupita commented:
“This appointment comes at a time of rapid technological advancement and growing digital adoption across Africa. Mobile technology will play a critical role in addressing the pressing challenges faced by our communities and in unlocking the full potential of Africa and the wider Global South. It is essential that no one is left behind on this journey toward a more connected future.”

Mupita has served as MTN Group President and CEO since September 2020, having previously held the role of Chief Financial Officer. Under his leadership, MTN has expanded its operations in Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Uganda.

Before joining MTN, Mupita was CEO of Old Mutual Emerging Markets, overseeing operations in 19 countries across Africa, Latin America, and Asia. He holds a BSc in Engineering and an MBA from the University of Cape Town, and has completed the General Management Program at Harvard Business School.
