Manufacturer has sent out invites to an event on September 7, with the smartphones rumoured to be on sale nine days later

Apple is expected to unveil iPhone 7 models next Wednesday after sending out invites to its annual September event.

It will take place at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. The invite didn’t confirm details of the new smartphones but the manufacturer traditionally announces new iPhones at its autumn product launch.

Several leaks have claimed that pre-orders will begin two days later, with the devices going on sale from September 16.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will reportedly come with a dual-camera system designed to capture brighter photos with greater detail.

Another notable change could be the removal of the headphone jack, with the devices instead relying on headphones that connect through Bluetooth or by using its ‘Lightening’ connector.

They will both likely have the same 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch touchscreens as their predecessors.

On July 27, Apple announced that iPhone sales had fallen for the second successive quarter, down 15 per cent year-on-year in the three months ending June 25 to 40.399 million units.

Two days later, the manufacturer revealed it had sold its billionth iPhone – just over nine years after the device first went on sale.
