Vodafone direct-to-satellite partner AST Mobile to deliver Verizon cellular service from space

Vodafone’s direct-to-satellit partner AST SpaceMobile and Verizon has signed a deal to deliver cellular service from space starting next year.

Shares of the space-based cellular broadband network went into orbit and jumped more than 18 per cenrt on the news.

AST SpaceMobile said its network is designed to operate across Verizon’s premium low-band spectrum, its own licensed L-band and S-band frequencies, and up to 1,150 MHz of low- and mid-band spectrum from mobile network operator partners worldwide.

The agreement will extend the reach of Verizon’s 850 MHz premium low-band spectrum into areas of the U.S. that would benefit from the ubiquitous coverage of space-based broadband technology,” said Abel Avellan, founder, chairman, and CEO of AST SpaceMobile.

The deal which builds on a strategic partnership announced earlier in 2024.

By integrating our expansive, reliable terrestrial network with this innovative space-based technology, we are paving the way for a future where everything and everyone can be connected, regardless of geography,” said Srini Kalapala, Verizon’s senior vice president of technology and product development.
