Samsung to pay Apple £180 million for patent breach

The latest ruling brings Samsung’s total fine for patent infringement to £929 million (£574 million)

Samsung has been ordered to pay Apple $290 million (£180 million) for patent infringement, bringing its total fines to £929 million (£574 million).

The case dates back to last year, when a jury awarded Apple more than $1 billion (£617 million) after finding Samsung had infringed its patents in 26 products. However Judge Lucy Koh at a Californian court said the jury had miscalculated damages for 13 products and that there should be a retrial.

Samsung argued that it should pay $50 million (£30.1 million) for use of features such as Apple’s “pinch to zoom” in 13 older products. Apple said it should receive $380 million (£235 million).

The $290 million (£180 million) granted adds to $599 million (£370 million) awarded to Apple over 14 products in March and $40.5 million (£25 million) awarded in April.

Apple said: “For Apple, this case has always been about innovation and the hard work that goes into inventing products that people love.”

Samsung said: “We are disappointed by today’s decision, which is based in large part on a patent that the US patent and trademark office has recently deemed invalid.

“While we move forward with out post-trial motions and appeals, we will continue to innovate with groundbreaking technologies and great products that are loved by our many customers all around the world.”
