EE doubles 4G base to two million in four months

Two thirds of new 4G customers have moved over from the operator’s 2G and 3G networks T-Mobile and Orange

EE has reached the two million 4G customer mark, doubling its base in the superfast mobile market in four months.

The operator, which was the first to launch 4G in the UK in October 2012, claims its 4G sign-up rate is the fastest in the world outside of South Korea.

EE announced last year that it expected to reach the two-million customer mark in the first quarter of 2014, which ends March 31. It said today that two-thirds of its 4G customers have moved across from it’s 2G and 3G brands T-Mobile and Orange.

Vodafone and O2 launched on August 29. While Vodafone announced in October that more than 100,000 people have signed up to its 4G service, O2 has not released any figures. However, O2 has said it has around one million customers who have a 4G-enabled phone.

EE’s network now covers 160 towns and cities, while O2 is covering 13 and Vodafone 15.

Three has rolled out 4G to eight cities and aims to transfer all eight million customers to a 4G tariff by the end of the first quarter.

Swantee said: “In just over a year after launching we have exceeded our target by reaching two million 4G customers across the country. We continue to have particular success converting our existing base to 4G, with approximately two out of three new 4G customers moving over from Orange and T-Mobile plans.”
