Telcos are unprepared for 5G, says NTT Data UK

Only a third of telcos have a clear strategy for 5G, according to a study.

Research from IT services provider NTT Data UK and research firm Teknowlogy Group found than only 35 per cent of telcos have a plan in place for 5G.

This is despite the same study revealing that 94 per cent of telecom providers believing that 5G will transform the sector.

The research found that nearly half (46 per cent) of these telco providers are still exploring the value that 5G can offer, with many (88pc) planning to implement 5G solutions over the next 24 months.

However only 10pc of telcos expect to generate more than 20pc of revenue from 5G or 5G augmented products in the next five years.

Commenting on the findings, NTT Data UK head of networks Matthew O’Neill said: “5G stands to disrupt the telco industry more than most, given the high demand for 5G technology across all industries.

“As such, telco businesses need to ensure they have a clear strategy to manage the transformative impact of the technology and meet current demand. The benefits of wider implementation promise great opportunity, but clarity is needed to ensure a smooth transformation journey.”
