The telco is aiming to build on 5G agreements in place with the UK’s four MNOs

Up to 800 new jobs are expected to be created by 2022, as Ericsson continues its 5G rollout in the UK.

The Swedish telco has agreements in place with all four major operators to deploy 5G.

The expansion will allow Ericsson to boost its local delivery capabilities, with plans to upgrade 20,000 network sites.

Of the 800 roles, 250 of these will be directly hired by Ericsson, with the remaining roles delivered through the telco’s field and resource partners.

Ericsson has invested heavily in its 5G deployment and is set to open a new 5G Centre of Excellence at its offices in Coventry by the end of the year.

This training facility will provide engineers and field service professionals with access to the latest 5G technology.

Accelerate 5G rollout

Digital Infrastructure Minister Matt Warman has welcomed the announcement.

“I welcome this investment in the UK by Ericsson which will create hundreds of skilled jobs across the country and accelerate the nationwide rollout of 5G.

“We’re working hard to build a world-class 5G network, including introducing landmark legislation to boost telecoms security and a new strategy to diversify the supply chain.

In a recent report from Analysys Mason, commissioned by Ericsson and Qualcomm, it has been revealed that 5G could generate £14.8 billion in additional economic growth.

The report also highlighted that the UK’s 5G rollout has so far been ‘average’ compared to other European countries.

Ericsson UK and Ireland CEO John Griffin has said investment in 5G is fundamental to the future of the UK.

He said: “With agreements in place to support a rapid 5G rollout for all four major UK mobile network operators, we are boosting our local delivery capabilities to support the UK’s ambitious connectivity targets and help prepare for a digital future that is full of exciting 5G opportunities for consumers and new industries.”
