The Fairphone 3 has modular design and is fully repairable

The Fairphone 3, dubbed the ‘world’s most ethical smartphone’, is now available from the Phone Co-op – the UK’s only telecoms co-operative which is owned and run by its members.

Made by a Dutch social enterprise and certified B-corp, the phone is made from responsibly-sourced and recycled material. It also offers incentives to the factories manufacturing the phones for increased worker satisfaction. Its modular construction means it’s fully repairable and allows for individual phone parts to be replaced, creating a longer-lasting device.

The Phone Co-op’s release of the phone follows on from Sky Mobile becoming the first to offer it in the UK last month, although the Phone Co-op has offered the phone since its first iteration released in 2013.

The phone runs on Android 9 Pie software and has a 5.7-inch full HD LCD display, a 3,000mAh battery, a 12-megapixel main camera and 8-megapixel front camera. Contracts are available from £30 per month and customers can go for a phone-only option for £420.

The Phone Co-op head of residential business Jacci Marcus said: “The Phone Co-op’s relationship with Fairphone goes back to their beginning, when we actively supported them to establish a viable market for ethical consumer electronics.

“Fairphone 3 is a real step forward for conscious consumers – people, including business professionals, who care about social and environmental values – who want a good smartphone and to make an ethical purchasing decision.

“With The Phone Co-op they get both. We’re the UK’s only telecoms co-operative, 100 per cent owned and run by members, and with a commitment to sustainability and fairer trade.”
