Manufacturer took wraps off a headset to rival Samsung’s Gear VR at the Chinese launch of its P9 headset

Huawei has announced a new virtual reality headset at the Chinese launch of its P9 flagship smartphone.

The Chinese manufacturer took wraps off the P9 in London earlier this month, but saved the big reveal of its VR device for the launch it its home country.

From images shown at the launch, the Huawei VR headset will looks similar to Samsung’s Gear VR device, which was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February.

It will work similar to LG’s VR headset, also unveiled in Barcelona, which connects directly to a smartphone using a USB-C cable. Huawei claims the new headset will simulate a 130-inch TV from two metres away, and will come with a 1080p resolution.

Pricing and availability has yet to be revealed.
