The figure was a result of Huawei’s largest spike in growth since 2010

Huawei shipped 200 million smartphones for the whole of 2018, a new record for the Chinese technology giant.

In 2017, the firm shipped 153 million meaning a 47 million year-on-year surge, the largest spike in growth for its smartphone division since 2010 when it shipped three million smartphones (see below).

Huawei’s flagship lines last year the P20 (pictured) and Mate 20 shipped 16 million and five million units respectively, with the former getting a head start having been released in April.

The bulk of the total figure came from sales of the Huawei Nova series which is unavailable in the UK. Huawei shipped over 65 million units. It unveiled in December the latest in the series, the Nova 4 which retails for CNY3099 (£390) and features a 25 megapixel front-facing camera in the screen. An atheistic Huawei calls a ‘hole-punch-style display’.

The record year also saw Huawei become the world’s second largest smartphone manufacturer in Q2 and Q3, with a global market share of 14.6pc according to IDC. Huawei has over 500 million active users in over 170 countries.

Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu said: “Looking to the future, Huawei’s consumer business will focus on the core concept of ‘consumer-centric’, and will dare to keep innovating, and make every effort to become a pioneer and leader in the next wave of the smartphone revolution, as well as constantly create new value for consumers, let our consumers better enjoy their lives, and truly make Huawei a brand that is beloved by consumers the world over.”
