5G has so far launched in 24 markets worldwide, with all four UK MNOs live

One in five mobile connections will be 5G by 2025, according to the GSMA as operators are predicted to invest heavily in the next few years.

But despite this, the GSMA reveals that 4G is still the dominant technology as the mobile industry body released its flagship ‘Mobile Economy’ report.

Last year 52 per cent of all global connections were 4G, despite the emergence of 5G last year. By 2025, the number of 4G connections is expected to grow even higher to 56 per cent.

However the report anticipates that mobile operators will spend $1.1 trillion worldwide in CAPEX between 2020 and 2025, 80 per cent of which will be focused on 5G.

5G has so far launched in 24 markets, with 46 operators according to the GSMA.

The GSMA also predicts 5G to generate $2.2 billion to the global economy in the next 14 years, with IoT connections growing by more than double to 25 billion between 2019 and 2025, with revenue around $1.1 trillion in this market.

While the GSMA also revealed that the mobile industry generated $4.1 trillion last year, which was 4.7 per cent of global GDP last year.  This figure is expected to grow to 4.9 per cent by 2024, with contribution up to $4.9 trillion.

GSMA Director general Mats Granryd said: “The mobile operator worldwide investment forecast will be more than a trillion dollars over the coming years, focused on rolling out advanced networks to serve both consumer and enterprise customers.”

“Over the last 12 months we have seen the 5G ‘hype’ make way for reality: millions of consumers are already migrating to 5G, while enterprises are beginning to embrace 5G-enabled network slicing, edge computing and low-latency services.”
