Second major partnership for TRG in 2020 following reBuy launch

Technology Recycle Group (TRG) has partnered with Fonehouse owner KTM Online to launch a consumer trade-in programme.

The service, which launched on November 3 under the Fonehouse brand, is also in partnership with delivery firm DPD, so that customers can trade in their handsets without leaving their properties.

TRG managing director Sam Hargreaves said that the partnership stemmed from increased device processing due to the effects of Covid-19.

“During lockdown we have seen a surge in people wanting to sell their old tech and our reverse logistics partnerships have really helped us deliver a safe and successful service,” he said. “We are delighted to have Fonehouse on board and we look forward to a long partnership.”

The tie-up is TRG’s second major processing partnership of this year, following its collaboration with German device buyback firm reBuy for its UK launch.

“Our aim is to be a one-stop shop for customers’ needs when buying a mobile phone,” added Fonehouse chief commercial officer Simon Weedon. “Adding the trade-in proposition to fonehouse.co.uk makes it easy for our customers to sell their handsets, puts money back in their pocket, and has the added advantage of being good for the environment. We’re really looking forward to working with TRG on this proposition.”

Fonehouse’s trade-in proposition is the latest in a series of online consumer trade-in schemes launched by retailers and distributors this year, as the secondary device market has seen an increase in business due to lockdowns and the closure of physical operator stores.

Companies including Drummond Corporations, TradologyUK, and the iOutlet have all launched services through which consumers can sell their old devices, while Envirofone relaunched in September after parent Redeem was acquired by TES.
