5G switched on at North London Tube stations

BAI-hosted 5G Tube connectivity follows December 4G switch on

Multi-network coverage is now available on sections of the London Underground Northern and Central Lines less than two months after 4G was switched on over the BAI Communications muti-carrier system

Vodafone, Three and EE’s 5G is live at Archway and Tufnell Park on the Northern line and Notting Hill Gate on the Central line with platform and ticket hall reception. 5G is also live within the tunnel segment at Notting Hill Gate and will work in the tunnel between Archway and Tufnell Park where 4G has been available since December. Mobile coverage will be rolled out across all of the London Underground by the end of 2024.

Mobile coverage is done over BAI’s multi-carrier network which connects stations and tunnels. The carrier network connects to the BAI infrastructure over Nokia base stations. Nokia is supplying and installing the equipment, activating and validating the infrastructure for mobile services.

The BAI system will extend 5G to the tunnels surrounding each of the stations in the near future as part of BAI’s ongoing rollout, which will also see both 4G and 5G arrive at many new stations this year.
