Apple shipments accounted for over half of the overall smartwatch market during H1 2020

Global smartwatch revenue grew by 20 per cent in the first half of 2020 according to Counterpoint Research.

That is despite the coronavirus pandemic which severely hit the smartphone market in H1 2020.

Apple, Garmin and Huawei led the way for market share as close to 42 million units were shipped.

The shipments were up 57pc year-on-year in India, nine per cent in Europe and five per cent in the US.

Counterpoint Research attributed the growth to people becoming more health conscious during the lockdown.

Apple dominance

Apple grew its market share to 51pc from 43.2pc in 2019, miles ahead of second-placed Garmin, with 9.4pc.

The Apple Watch Series 5 and 3 were the two most shipped smartwatches for the first half, followed by Huawei’s Watch GT2.

Huawei just edged its Korean rivals Samsung for third place overall, with 8.3pc share. Samsung accounted for 7.2pc of the market, down 2.1pc YoY.

Counterpoint Research senior analyst Sujeong Lim said: “The smartwatch space remains a popular consumer device segment, compared to the downturn seen in smartphone demand and many other segments in the first six months of 2020 due to the devastation caused by coronavirus.
