An outdoor small cell project in the City of London by EE and connectivity infrastructure Freshwave is now expanding with 25 new sites, boosting 4G and 5G coverge across the Square Mile.
Sites benefiting from the new coverage include St. Paul’s Cathedral, Cannon Street, and the Bank of England.
The project aims to improve network capacity and coverage. More sites are also under construction to further enhance mobile connectivity.
The project started two years ago and and is seeing up to 7.5 terabytes of data being downloaded weekly across the initial pilot sites. The new mobile infrastructure allows all four UK mobile operators to provide 4G and 5G services, making it the first of its kind in the country.
The small cells, installed at street level, are said to be effective in busy urban areas where large numbers of mobiles are being used at the same time
Freshwave CEO Simon Frumkin, (below) said “Our method allows mobile operators to enhance their networks with minimal disruption to communities.”
