Platforms meant to set new benchmarks for speed and performance
Qualcomm unveiled three new Snapdragon chipsets at its Snapdragon Tech Summit in Hawaii on December 4.
The Snapdragon 865, 765, and 765G platforms are intended to be the gateway to an accessible 5G experience for mobile users.
According to the manufacturer, the 865 can provide peak speeds of up to 7.5Gbps. “Snapdragon 865 supports the world’s most advanced 5G connectivity and features, raising the bar for what a mobile device should be,” said Qualcomm’s general manager for mobile Alex Katouzian. “It’s the culmination of Qualcomm’s more than 30 years of wireless leadership and innovation.”
Speaking about the new 765 platforms, he added: “We expect 5G to be the fastest cellular transition in history. As the world’s leading wireless technology innovator, we are committed to driving 5G throughout our Snapdragon tiers in record time. Our expanded portfolio including Snapdragon 765 and 765G has the potential to make 5G accessible to billions of smartphone users around the world and help enable experiences like high-speed gaming, intelligent multi-camera capture, and all-day battery life, on a global scale.”
ABI Research vice president Malik Saadi said of the 765 range: “The introduction of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 is a significant milestone. This platform has every potential to accelerate the adoption of 5G in mid-range smartphones, giving a leading edge to Qualcomm in this market segment. In contrast, smartphones powered by chipsets from competitors MediaTek and UNISOC, which traditionally address this mid-range smartphone market segment, are not expected to hit the marketplace before the second half of 2020.
“Secondly, the Snapdragon X52 Modem-RF system design is 100 per cent based on Qualcomm’s chips, from the modem to the antenna. This means partners among OEMs will no longer have to go through complex RF procurement processes involving many RF chips suppliers. This will enable them to save both time and money to bring 5G smartphones to the market while adopting the most innovative 5G features as soon as they are available.”
Qualcomm expects that devices based on the new Snapdragon platforms will be available in the first quarter of 2020.
