The P9 has been backed by a £10 million marketing campaign in the UK since its launch in May

Huawei has revealed the total number of P9 units shipped since its launch in May this year has surpassed nine million.

The company’s vice president of handset strategy announced the milestone at a ‘fan party’ on November 10 (below). It comes after the Chinese manufacturer claimed numbers had hit six million in September this year.

According to recent figures from Canalys, Huawei is closing in on nearest rival Apple in EMEA after seeing total shipments in the region rise 70 per cent to over 10 million units.

Huawei exclusively revealed to Mobile News in June the flagship had been supported by a £10 million marketing campaign in the UK. It featured Hollywood celebrities Scarlett Johanson and Henry Cavill, followed later by Brooklyn Beckham, son of former England footballer David Beckham.

It is currently available from all four UK operators and Carphone Warehouse. There are three variants in the range; the Lite (£239), standard P9 (£449) and more premium Plus (£549 exclusive from Vodafone). Each is equipped with a dual lens camera made in partnership with renowned German camera maker Leica.

Global sales for the company have grown from 32 million to 108 million (2015) in the last six years. It is the third biggest smartphone maker in the world behind Samsung and Apple, with Q1 market share totalling 8.2 per cent. It is also seventh in the UK with 2.1 per cent share, up from 1.3 per cent, for the three months ending April.
