Old mobiles handed into Orange or T-Mobile shops to be recycled, with funds going towards raising £1 million for the ‘Mobile for Meals’ campaign

Consumers are being encouraged to recycle their old mobile phones at Orange and T-Mobile stores in a bid to raise £1 million for the ‘Mobile for Meals campaign.

Children’s charity Kids Company and the UK’s largest online parenting website have launched the appeal, making it the first time a charity has been forced to raise funds for use in the UK.

Kids Company has revealed that 17,000 children – a 223 per cent increase in the past year – are now using its services for their only meal of the day.

The statistics show two children in every British school class are going hungry as their parents cannot afford to provide proper meals, with an estimated one million children now suffering ‘food insecurity’, meaning they live in homes without enough food to eat.

From today unwanted handsets can be dropped off at any Orange or T-Mobile store across the UK and will be sent to mobile recycling firm Regenersis, with the value of the phone going towards the campaign.

Everything Everywhere VP of retail Andrew Coull said: “We have 720 stores across the UK and there are millions of unwanted phones out there. This is a chance for people to make a real difference to children who go hungry every day. We appeal to everyone that has an old mobile phone to bring it in today to be recycled.”
