More Tube stations and tunnels get 4G as Underground roll out continues

Vodafone and Three have followed EE’s announcement of more  London Underground stations.  Three and Vodafone adding to coverage on half of the Jubilee line between Westminster and Canning Town.  BAI Communications is operating the 4G network on behalf of TfL and has produced similar public transport networks in Hong Kong, Toronto and New York.

 More than 2,000 kilometres of cabling as well as thousands of radios are being installed within tunnels and stations, all fitted outside of operational hours. Around 500 people are working overnight across the Tube network to install mobile equipment, with all work needed to be tidied away before the network opens for customers every morning.

Coverage on Three and Vodafone is live between Holland Park, Notting Hill Gate and Queensway on the Central line and Archway, Tufnell Park and Kentish Town on the Northern line. This will be extended to Camden Town, Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Circus in the New Year.

Full coverage by end of next year

London Underground customers get coverage across ticket halls and platforms, as well as in tunnels between those stations. Coverage will reach more stations in 2023 and all London Underground, by the end of 2004. as well as the Elizabeth line, with 5G at the vast majority of locations.

“Today marks a great step forward in the delivery of mobile connectivity on the Tube, as Londoners will now have increased access to high-speed mobile coverage when travelling through more Tube stations,” said Deputy Mayor for Transport Seb Dance.

“The Mayor pledged to Londoners that he would deliver 4G throughout the Tube network as part of his commitment to building a better London for everyone – and I have no doubt that this expansion of coverage will help transform journeys for millions of passengers”.
