The network came on top for mobile internet reliability at Heathrow, Gatwick and London City airports

EE is the most reliable network for mobile internet usage at London airports, according to the latest study from RootMetrics.

RootMetrics measured the reliability of EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three at Gatwick, London City and Heathrow airports. Tests at London City and Gatwick were conducted last year on December 2, whilst studies at Heathrow were completed a week later on December 9.

It rated all four networks out of 100 for overall performance. At Heathrow, EE came top with a score 97.9, followed closely by Vodafone (89), Three (82.1) and O2 (81.6). EE gained a score of 96.1 at London City, leading Three (94.2), O2 (91.4) and Vodafone (90.1). Tests at Gatwick saw EE win again with 97.9, as Three (84.5), O2 (81.4) and Vodafone (79.4) trailed behind.

EE’s median download and upload speeds were considerably faster than other networks too. At Heathrow it recorded download and upload speeds of 27.3Mbps and 14.2Mbps. It had respective download and upload speeds of 21.4Mbps and 18.2Mbps at Gatwick, whilst download and upload speeds at City Airport came in at 11Mbps and 12.8Mbps respectively. O2, Vodafone and Three’s download and upload speeds measured below 10Mbps at all airports.

RootMetrics also measured how long each network kept customers connected for when completing email, web or data transfer tasks at each airport. Three scored a maximum 100 score at London City, with all other networks scoring above 99. EE came first at London Heathrow and London Gatwick with scores of 98.3 and 99.7 respectively.

RootMetrics general manager of Europe Scott Stonham said: “Our testing showed that, of the three airports tested, EE customers will generally experience first class performance, while Three’s customers can expect their smoothest ride at London City.”
