The study was based on interviews with 2028 households to assess the impact of the pre-pay option.

Interestingly 20 percent of users surveyed by J.D.Power selected Virgin Mobile as their first or second choice network.

Among those contemplating switching Orange is cited most often as the potential future provider.

The study found that consumer satisfaction in the pre-pay and contract segments is driven by three identical factors but with varying impacts.

In the pre-pay segment consumers felt the top three features of importance are tariff options customer service and call quality/coverage. In the contract segment greater emphasis was placed on customer service followed by call quality/coverage and tariff options.

In the contract segment Orange led the industry in virtually every driver of customer satisfaction said J.D.Power. The study concludes that household penetration is starting to level off.

BT goes to court over 3G payments

Vodafone and Orange have been given up to 36 weeks to pay depending on when Orange is sold saving them around 50 million interest.

BT wants the Government to make all licensees pay within a similar timescale to avoid giving advantage to any particular bidder.

A BT spokesman said: BT is delighted to have won a 3G licence and will of course meet its obligations under the rules.

The sums of money involved are considerable. The interest on the 10 billion which Vodafone and Orange owe for their licences is around 2 million a day. This could lead to them saving close to 500 million over a 36-week payment holiday. It is only fair that all bidders should pay at the same time.

BT has demanded an early hearing. Discussions continue with the Government however in an attempt to seek a resolution.
