Vodafone trials quantum computing to plan network deployments

Staff Reporter
June 10, 2025

Vodafone is to collaborate with ORCA Computing to explore how quantum computing can be massively speed up deployment of broadband and mobile infrastructure. The partnership will assess how ORCA’s PT-2 Series photonic quantum computer can solve complex optimisation challenges involved in broadband rollout—such as reducing the total length of fibre optic cabling and optimising the placement of mobile base stations. These factors have a direct impact on the capital and operational costs associated with network expansion.

Vodafone’s initial focus will be on evaluating quantum-enhanced solutions for fibre network architecture. Longer-term, the company expects to explore applications including undersea cables and direct-to-mobile satellite broadband.

The initiative is part of Vodafone’s strategy to increase automation, improve efficiency, and future-proof its global network operations through emerging technologies.

Quantum leap
Regular computers process data using binary bits Quantum computers use quantum bits called ‘qubits’ which can represent multiple states at once. This allows them to calculate many possible solutions much more quickly and with greater accuracy.

Quantum computers can solve in seconds and minutes problems which would rake regular computers hours and days

Luke Ibbetson, Head of R&D at Vodafone, said:
“Our work with ORCA Computing is focused on ultra-complex network modelling tasks that would take current systems hours and days or longer to complete. The ability to perform these calculations faster could lead to efficiencies in how we manage our networks.”

Vodafone is a participant in the UK government’s Quantum Technology Access Programme (QTAP). The programme supports organisations who are looking to develop algorithms that can be run on a quantum computer or simulation, but lack knowledge about quantum technology and its market.

James Fletcher, Head of Solutions Architecture at ORCA Computing, added:
“This collaboration with Vodafone demonstrates that quantum acceleration of telecommunications use cases is viable and delivering results with commercial relevance.”

Fletcher: quantum acceleration delivering results with commercial relevance.
