The latest areas to receive the gigabit boost include Brighton, Derby and Sheffield

Virgin Media O2 has expanded its gigabit broadband rollout, with an additional 2.5 million homes receiving the service.

It takes the total number of homes across the UK that are covered by Virgin Media O2’s gigabit service to 12.8m homes.

The service has been switched on in a number of towns and cities including Brighton, Colchester, Derby, Gillingham, Portsmouth, Southend, Sheffield, Stoke-on-Trent, Swansea, Wakefield and more.

It means Virgin Media is on track to reach its target of 15.5m homes with its gigabit network by the end of the year.

The Virgin Media Gig 1 broadband service provides average download speeds of 1,130Mbps, which the company claims to be the UK’s fastest speeds.

Virgin Media O2 chief executive officer Lutz Schuler said: “Our continued investment means more than three-quarters of our network is now gigabit ready, offering millions of households across the country access to future-proof services and the fastest broadband available from any major provider.

“We’re continuing with our mission to upgrade the UK and connect our entire network to gigabit speeds by the end of the year – a pace unrivalled by any other provider.”

Digital Secretary Nadine Dorries has praised Virgin Media O2 for its pacey rollout.

“We’re investing billions to bring better broadband to homes and businesses across the UK as part of our plans to level up the country.

“But we can only do this in partnership, and I’m delighted to see Virgin Media O2 turbocharging its offer of internet connections for millions of families and putting the might of industry behind us.”
