Many depend on 5G services to work from their phone

Nearly 24 million UK employees are spending 12 hours a week doing their job on their smartphones according to research by Uswitch.

The research revealed that 24 per cent use their phones for video calls, 17pc dial into meetings, 50pc answer emails and 14pc work with spreadsheets.

Of those surveyed, 70pc reported that they have at least one work-based app on their phone and nearly a sixth of workers reported an increase in time spent working on their phones since the pandemic.

Those aged 18-34 spend an average of an hour and 42 minutes a day working from their phone compared to 30 minutes a day from the over 55’s.

Two million British consumers now rely on their 5G connection for work.

Over 15 million consumers now own a 5G phone, with eight million buying one since the start of the pandemic.

Uswitch.com mobiles expert Ru Bhikha said: “The way we use our smartphones has fundamentally changed in the last two years, and it’s unlikely to go back to business as usual anytime soon.

“Phones are now used for much more than calling friends and family, they are an extension of our office set-up and millions of people are using them to dial into calls, send emails and work on documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

“With well over 15 million people investing in a 5G-ready handset, it is clear that consumers are ready and keen to access these faster speeds.”
