New handsets releases prompt year-on-year growth for the first time in two years according to research firm GfK

The total number of handsets sold in the UK increased by 15 per cent last month, according to figures from research firm GfK.

It is the first time the market has shown year-on-year growth for two years.

In its monthly report on the telecoms market GfK attributes the growth to the increase in popularity of two year contracts and also customers returning for upgrades that had been held until recent high-profile releases.

Of these new handset sales 60 per cent were on contracts which, according to GfK, takes the operators from a 70/30 pre-pay contract split 10 years ago to around 50/50 today.

The last time the handset market showed year-on-year growth in the monthly figures was in October 2010.
