Retailer saw a 413 per cent increase on the handset’s launch day as customers rushed to trade in their old Apple devices before upgrading

Carphone Warehouse saw a 413 per cent increase on September 21 in the number of customers trading in their older Apple devices before upgrading to the iPhone 5.

This works out at more than one phone per minute, with the retailer stating that trade-ins have continued to be popular since the opening weekend of sale for the iPhone 5.

Carphone Warehouse chief commercial officer Graham Stapleton (pictured) said: “Apple fans were clearly very excited and keen to get their hands on the new iPhone. During launch weekend our stores were inundated with customers looking to trade-in old devices at a rate of one handset per minute.

“We’re absolutely delighted with the number of people who have visited our stores since the iPhone 5 officially launched. Customer demand for this handset has been off the scale.”

In the days leading up to the iPhone 5’s release on September 21, Carphone had said that it was prioritising customer-pre-orders after taking more than four times as many requests for the device than any other handset launch in its trading history.
