Three is currently investing £2 billion on improving its 5G service, while expanding its coverage across the UK

Three UK has continued the rollout of its 5G network across the UK, with the service now live in Manchester, Glasgow and Reading.

It takes the total number of towns and cities in the UK covered by Three’s 5G service to 154, across 800 sites since launching 5G in August 2019.

The latest sites in Manchester, Glasgow and Reading are Three’s first Ericsson 5G sites, since striking a commercial 5G agreement with the Swedish telco in July.

It was a move made to speed up the next stage of Three’s 5G rollout across the UK and is part of a £2 billion investment from the operator.

The investment will transform Three’s UK network and IT infrastructure, while also improving its 4G network.

Commenting on the new sites, Three UK chief operating officer Susan Buttsworth said: “We’re pleased to have our first Ericsson sites live on our network. Ericsson are a key partner in the transformation of our network.

“Our customers use 3.5 times more data than the industry average so the investments that we are making are vital to enhancing current performance of our 4G network, futureproofing it and delivering on our promise of providing better connectivity, every day for every customer.”

The investment has also seen Three launch 20 new data centres, while also improving its fibre backhaul capabilities, plus the rollout of VoLTE across its entire 4G network.
