However Apple are still yet to release a 5G smartphone

Samsung and Huawei dominated market share for 5G smartphone shipments during the first quarter of 2020.

That is according to statistics from Strategy Analytics, who revealed 24.1 million 5G smartphones were sold in the first quarter of the year.

Samsung just edged Huawei as it shipped 8.3 million units, while Huawei sold eight million.  In total both vendors claimed two-thirds of the overall market share.

The figures reflect the growth in 5G services which has been rolled out to more markets this year and has already surpassed the total number of 5G smartphones sold for all of 2019 (18.7 million).

Strategy Analytics revealed that the biggest markets for 5G smartphones were China, South Korea, the US and Europe.

Strategy Analytics executive director Neil Mawston said: “Chinese smartphone vendors captured 61 percent of top 5 vendor 5G smartphone shipment volumes in Q1 2020, with the majority of those volumes going to the Chinese market.

“This reflects the speed with which Chinese operators have rolled out 5G networks, as well as the underlying demand for 5G smartphones, despite the Covid-19 pandemic that shut down large parts of China during the Q1 2020 period. As China continues to ramp up economic activity, we expect 5G shipments to this market to continue to expand dramatically in 2020.”

Vivo with 2.9 million shipments were the third biggest vendor for 5G sales, while Xiaomi sold 2.5 million units and Oppo 1.2 million for the quarter.
