However 5G is predicted to generate a number of opportunities to offset the losses

Mobile operator voice revenue is expected to drop to £158 million ($208) by 2024 from £297 million ($391) according to a study by Juniper Research.

It comes as customers prefer to use more flexible and OTT (over-the-top) services instead such as Whatsapp.

These services are projected to grow with close to 4.5 billion users by 2024 as revealed in Juniper’s study Mobile Voice: Emerging opportunities for operators and vendors 2019 to 2024.

The growth of 5G enabled services is also expected to contribute to this decline, with a number of new voice and video services will be generated and in the process provide new revenue streams for service providers.

These additional revenue streams will enable innovative use cases for VoLTE and ViLTE across a number of industries.

The report also states that high data throughput and low latency will lead to opportunities in Vo5G (voice over 5G).

Despite the predicted decline of operator voice revenue, Juniper’s research indicates that improved 4G coverage will increase the volume of mobile video call users and this partially offset the voice revenue losses.
