Most devices bought in other retailers according to annual market report by CCS Insight

Only 10 per cent of tablets sold in the UK have been bought from mobile phone retailers according to a new report by analyst firm CCS Insight.

In its second annual survey into customer attitudes and the uptake of tablet devices it found that five per cent had been bought in ‘mobile phone retailers’ with an additional five per cent in the network stores.

The most popular place for buying the devices were ‘own brand stores’ – such as the Apple Store – where 32 per cent are purchased.

Next most popular were PC and electrical retailers with a 25 per cent share followed by general retailers – such as supermarkets – with 23 per cent.

The survey also found 35 per cent of UK adults considering buying a tablet in the next year would want to use 4G on it.

CCS Insight mobile industry analyst Martin Garner said: “Britain’s love affair with tablets looks set to continue as the mass market starts to get on board in 2013. These new buyers have different expectations and buying criteria from early adopters, which will shake up the market.

“With new buyers more interested in using their tablets out of the home and starting to get excited by 4G, we can expect to see greater sales opportunities for the UK’s mobile operators and retailers. However, they will need suitable new data tariff plans to balance users’ interest in mobile connectivity against greater price sensitivity.”
