IFA 2019: HMD announces five new Nokia phones

Devices run the gamut from feature to smart

HMD Global announced five new Nokia phones at IFA 2019, ranging from low-end feature phones to smartphones.

The phones announced announced are the Nokia 110, the Nokia 2720 Flip, which are feature phones, the Nokia 800 Tough, which is a rugged feature phone, and the Nokia 6.2, and the Nokia 7.2, which are smartphones.

HMD is aiming at the mid-range smartphone segment with the 7.2 and 6.2. Chief product officer Juho Sarvikas said: “Both smartphones come with a signature two-day battery life, and feature a unique design achieved with high-tech materials that’s true to our Nordic heritage. In addition, the Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2 are Android 10-ready and will deliver on an OS experience that just keeps getting better.”

The 7.2 features a 48MP triple camera setup, with 64GB internal storage that can be increased with a Micro SD and either 4GB or 6GB of RAM. It runs on a Qualcomm SDM660 Snapdragon chipset with Android 9 OS. It will be available from the end of September in Cyan Green, Charcoal and Ice colours, and will be cost €299 or €349, depending on its RAM variant.

The Nokia 6.2 features new PureDisplay screen technology, which enables real-time HDR photography. It runs on a Qualcomm SDM636 Snapdragon chipset with Android 9 OS. It comes in variants of 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage, and 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage, in Ceramic Black and Ice colours. It will be available from October, and will cost €199 or €249, depending on the storage variant.

HMD announced its first rugged device with the Nokia 800 Tough, a feature phone that comes with 4G connectivity, WiFi hotspot capability, and apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Google Assistant. It has a 2,100mAh battery, and is Ip68 certified for water and dust and MIL-STD-810G compliant, meaning it can survive in temperatures from -20C to 55C. It comes in Black Steel and Desert Sand colours and will be available from October at €109.

The Finnish manufacturer continued its commitment to the feature phone market with its announcement of the 2720 Flip and the 110.

The Nokia 2720 Flip is a flip feature phone with 4G and WiFi hotspot capabilities and apps including Google Assistant, WhatsApp and Facebook. Its battery can last for up to 27 days on standby, and it has a 1.3-inch external screen for viewing notifications when the phone is closed. It comes in Ocean Blue, Black and Pink colours, and will be available in September for €89.

Nokia 110

Nokia 110

The vendor’s most affordable new device is the Nokia 110, which features MP3 capabilities and 32GB expandable storage, as well as a built-in FM radio. It will be available from mid-September for $20 in Ocean Blue, Black and Pink colours.

HMD Global also announced that its redesigned Nokia 3310 and 8110 4G devices had sold 10 million combined units since their launches, and CEO Florian Seiche promised an “affordable, yet premium 5G experience” to come in 2020.
