Device powered by world’s highest performing processor and like the P9, features dual-lens camera technology, but won’t initially go on sale in the UK

Huawei has taken the wraps off its new Mate 9 smartphone at a launch event in Munich, Germany today. However, the device is not currently scheduled for release in the UK.

The Mate 9 is powered by a Kirin 960 chipset, which the manufacturer claims is the highest performing of its kind in the world.

It combines a 4,000mAh battery with Huawei’s new ‘SuperCharge’ technology that enables a 50 per cent improvement over the previous handsets, with 10 minutes of charge providing enough power to watch two full films.

The power saving technology also increases battery life to provide over two days of uninterrupted performance, including a 40 per cent increase in call time and 20 per cent increase in gaming time.

Dual-lens camera

Following from the flagship P9 smartphone earlier this year, the Mate 9 features the second generation dual-lens camera co-engineered with imaging specialists Leica.

This now includes a 12 megapixel RGB sensor, 20 megapixel monochrome sensor and ‘Hybrid Zoom’, which Huawei says features a superior 2x magnification.

It also houses a 5.9-inch FHD touchscreen and sees the introduction of EMUI 5.0, which in time understand the user’s behaviour patterns, ensuring the highest priority applications are given preference subject to system resources.

Intuitive UI

EMUI 5.0 also brings a new interface design with more than half of features on the Mate 9 now reached within two clicks while over 90 per cent can be reached within three clicks.

The Mate 9 will cost ‚¬699 and come in black, grey, silver, gold, brown and white. It will initially be available in 12 countries, including China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Spain but notably, not the UK.

Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu said: “In developing the Huawei Mate 9, we started with a simple question – how can we improve every element of the smartphone experience?

“Breathtaking”

“We know that for today’s business users, a fast and functional smartphone is just the beginning. Consumers also want a gorgeous design and intuitive features, so we created two new devices at the forefront of hardware and software innovation. The result is the new Mate Series, breathtakingly new, inside and out.”
