Manufacturer shipped over 19.1m devices in its home market giving it a 16pc share according to Canalys

Huawei shipped its highest ever number of handsets in its home Chinese market, selling more than 19.1 million devices in Q1 2016.

The manufacturer, which saw its global shipments grow almost 50 per cent year-on-year for H1, was less than 100,000 devices shy of breaking Samsung’s Chinese shipment records of 19.2 million devices in a quarter. Samsung set the record in Q4 2013.

Oppo and Vivo took the second and third spots, according to Canalys figures, both surpassing the 15 million device mark in the three months ending March 31.

Xiaomi, who led the market last year, saw shipments remain flat on a quarterly basis, but year-on-year sales were down by 20 per cent.

Apple beat Samsung to fifth spot in Canalys top five list with a nine per cent market share.
