Carphone says numbers up 150 per cent compared to the Galaxy S4’s opening weekend last year, while Phones 4u reports first day sales doubled

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has broken sales records at both Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4u.

Carphone said sales were up 150 per cent over the launch weekend versus the Galaxy S4 from the same period last year.

On February 28 – four days after the Galaxy S5 was unveiled – the retailer revealed that pre-registrations for the device, which was released on April 11, were up 130 per cent compared to the whole 10 day period for the Galaxy S4 last year.

A Carphone Warehouse spokesperson said: “The advanced 4G capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy S5 were a huge point of interest and 95 per cent of customers purchasing the smartphone this weekend have taken out 4G contracts.

“Along with the brilliant sales, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has also had some of the biggest pre-order numbers ever, so we weren’t surprised to see the Samsung fans out in full force this weekend. S4 sales at launch last year were not easy to beat but the S5 has smashed them so far and it will be interesting to see if this continues over the coming months.”

Phones 4u revealed opening day sales of the Galaxy S5 were double that of the Galaxy S4 from the same period last year.

Pre-registrations at the retailer reached over five figures ahead of the pre-order launch for the device. It revealed that official pre-orders had “escalated significantly” past those of its predecessor.

Phones 4u chief marketing officer Scott Hooton said: “The newest 4G Samsung smartphone to enter the market made up a huge 40% of our contract sales on day one of its global launch, and 99% of our Galaxy S5 sales so far are on 4G.”

Neither retailer provided exact sales figures.
