Dunne’s new role at the US operator will become active at the start of next month (September)

Former O2 CEO Ronan Dunne has been named as the new group president of US operator Verizon Wireless.

The newly created role will be effective from September. He will be based at Verizon’s operational headquarters in New Jersey and he will report directly to its president of operations John Stratton. Overall responsibilities include overseeing marketing, wireless, network, customer care and digital operations.

Stratton said: “Ronan brings a wealth of expertise, as well as global wireless perspective and experience to Verizon Wireless. He has a proven record of performance in highly competitive environments. We look forward to his leadership as Verizon continues to invest in and evolve our wireless business to provide the best experience for our customers.”

Dunne had spent 15 years at O2 before announcing his decision to leave last month (July 15). Previous roles at O2 include head of finance (2001 to 2005) and CFO (2005 to 2007), with his position as UK CEO being active from December 2007. It was as CEO where he most notably increased customer numbers from 18 million to 25 million.

Former CFO Mark Evans took over as O2 CEO at the start of this month, with Dunne playing a supporting role until September. Evans’ replacement is yet to be announced.

Evans joined the operator in January 2012, having held previous positions as Global Technology CFO and  Vodafone Group UK and Ireland CFO.
