Three UK has partnered with Ericsson to build a new cloud-based core network that will more than triple the network’s capacity to 9Tbps (terabits per second).
Data traffic on Three’s network doubled to over 2Tbps in December 2024 compared with two years prior. Notably, it took nearly 20 years for data traffic to reach 1Tbps.
According to research service Enders Analysis, Three UK leads in mobile data usage, with customers using an average of 31.5 GB per month—more than double the national average and 18% higher than the previous year.
The new core network, based on Ericsson’s 5G Core and Cloud Native Infrastructure solutions, is being deployed across Three’s national data centres. This system is designed to handle higher data loads, improve reliability, and reduce latency by positioning key infrastructure closer to customers.
The first phase is expected to be operational by the end of the year. Migration of traffic to the new system will take place gradually over the coming years.
Iain Milligan, Chief Network Officer at Three UK, said: “Data usage on our network has doubled in just over two years, driven by home broadband, streaming, and gaming. This upgrade ensures we can continue to meet the needs of our customers now and in the future.”
Katherine Ainley, CEO of Ericsson UK & Ireland, added: “We are proud to work with Three UK on this significant network upgrade. This partnership builds on years of collaboration, and the new system will help Three meet the growing data demands of its customers.”
