The high-speed service will be rolled out across the entire Chilterns Railways network by December 2016

EE has partnered with Chiltern Railways to provide a high-speed, onboard WiFi service that won’t lose connection when trains pass through tunnels or similar WiFi blackspots.

The service will be made possible due to a new wireless trackside network provided by the operator. EE will roll out the service across the entire Chilterns railway network by December this year. The rail service is currently used by thousands of customers across 65 stations, including London Marylebone, Aylesbury and Birmingham.

Chiltern parent company Arriva plans to use the service across its other areas of business, including Northern Rail, should this one prove successful.

Chiltern Railways commercial director Thomas Ableman said: “We were one of the first train companies to introduce free Wi-Fi around five years ago on our London to Birmingham trains. Since then we’ve invested in 4G capability. However due to black spots on the line, the service was limited in places. It was always our vision to deliver truly connected mobility and now, thanks to our partnership with EE, Chiltern will have the fastest and most reliable Wi-Fi in the country.”
