Canalys Q2 2021: PC shipments in Western Europe on the rise again

Tablets also on the up for the quarter with sales up 18 per cent

PC shipments grew three per cent year-on-year in Western Europe for Q2 2021 as the sector continued post-Covid growth.

According to Canalys, shipments reached 15 million units for the quarter for desktops, notebooks and workstations.

The market growth follows four successive quarters of solid growth, albeit the three per cent rise representing a more modest second quarter.

It comes amid the challenges faced by many vendors in securing key components, most notably around chipsets. This according to Canalys has limited the vendors’ orders and growth even further.

The market during the past 12 months has grown significantly due to the pandemic forcing people to stay connected and work remotely.

Lenovo led the way in Western Europe for the quarter with 27 per cent market share following shipments of 4.1m units, followed by HP (24pc share) and 3.7m units.

Dell, Acer and Apple closed the top five out with market shares of 14pc, 10pc and nine per cent respectively.

Canalys research analyst Trang Pham said: “Demand is still strong. Western Europe has emerged into a post-COVID ‘new normal’, a rapidly digitalizing world, as shown by the robust shipment numbers. Had supply issues been resolved, we could have seen even higher growth in the PC market.”

Pham added: “Lenovo’s global leading market position gave it greater bargaining power with suppliers, allowing it to fulfill orders faster than its competitors, especially in Western Europe.

“Previous leader HP, in comparison, was unable to maintain the required balance between the US and Europe, which resulted in the vendor losing its top spot in Western Europe.”

Tablets on rise as Apple continues dominance

Meanwhile the tablet market grew 18pc during Q2 2021 in Western Europe, with 7.9m units shipped.

Apple, which has for a long time dominated in the region, saw sales of tablets grow 73pc during the quarter.

Lenovo came second, following growth of 87pc YoY, while Samsung, Huawei and Amazon completed the top five.
