BBMe is free for the first year of its subscription

BlackBerry has announced that it is making BBM Enterprise (BBMe) available for individual use following Emtek’s decision to end its BBM consumer service next month.

Indonesian company Emtek, which has held the BBM license since 2016, confirmed that it was shutting down its consumer BBM offering on May 31.

Following this announcement BlackBerry has made BBMe available through Android’s Google Play Store, with the service free for the first year.

After the year subscription is up, a six-month subscription is available for $2.49, with Apple users also able to use the service in the coming months.

BlackBerry says it has made the decision to continue the service for its BBM users out of “respect” for their loyalty.

BlackBerry chief marketing officer Mark Wilson said: “While we respect Emtek’s decision, we’re disappointed the platform did not thrive and grow as expected.

“After much consideration, we decided that BBM’s loyal users should continue to have a secure messaging platform that they can trust.”
