The service will enable consumers access to parts, tools and manuals

Apple has officially announced its providing greater access for customers to carry out their own iPhone repairs, as the vendor unveils its Self Repair Service.

This service will allow for customers that wish to repair their iPhones to gain access to genuine Apple parts and tools from the vendor.

This repair service will initially be available to consumers, starting with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, when the service launches early next year.

It will launch in the US first before expanding to additional countries throughout 2022, Apple has confirmed.

Apple has come under fire in the past for limiting access and information around repairs from consumers and repair firms.

It means that customers will now join more than 5,000 Apple Authorised Services Providers, plus 2,800 independent repair providers that have access to these tools, parts and manuals.

Apple’s initial phase of the program will centre around some of its ‘most commonly serviced modules’ including displays, batteries and cameras.

Apple chief operating officer Jeff Williams said: “Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed.

“In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to Apple genuine parts, tools and training, and now we’re providing an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs.”
