Apple adds iPad to self-service repair scheme and expands parts access for independents

Apple has expanded its Self Service Repair programme to cover out-of-warranty repairs on iPads by independent repairers

Repair professionals will now be able to access official manuals, diagnostics tools, and order genuine Apple parts such as displays, batteries, cameras, and charging ports. Toolkits and rental tools will also be available for those who need them.

The service will support the iPad Air (M2 and newer), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16).

This development marks a shift in Apple’s aftermarket strategy and provides a new revenue stream for mobile repair shops, particularly those already working with Apple parts through the Self Service Repair Store. Apple’s repair programme now supports 65 products, including the latest iPhone 16e, MacBook Air, and Mac Studio.

Brian Naumann, Apple’s vice president of AppleCare, said: “With today’s announcement, we’re excited to expand our repair services to more customers, enabling them to further extend the life of their products — all without compromising safety, security, or privacy.”

The announcement also included updates to Apple’s Genuine Parts Distributor programme. Launched earlier this year, the scheme allows independent repair providers without a direct Apple service relationship to order original parts through third-party distributors. In Europe, MobileSentrix and Mobileparts.shop are now authorised to distribute Apple parts, alongside MobileSentrix in the U.S.

This expansion is expected to make genuine Apple parts more widely available and affordable for smaller repair shops, helping them stay competitive while maintaining service quality. iPad parts will be added to the distributor programme tomorrow, joining an existing catalogue of iPhone components.

Apple’s broader repair ecosystem now includes a mix of official Apple Stores, Authorised Service Providers, Independent Repair Providers, and now a growing network of distributors and self-service customers. Later this summer, the programme will launch in Canada, making it available in 34 countries.

Apple’s continued push into accessibility for independent repairers is a signal that DIY and third-party repair will remain central to the company’s evolving service model.
