No operator partnerships, but low pricing for high specs

Xiaomi has announced an online-only UK launch this month for its Redmi Note 9 series, the latest instalment of its budget sub-brand.

The manufacturer also claimed it had sold 30 million Redmi Note 8 series phones worldwide, as well as 110 million Redmi Note phones overall, as it celebrated its 10th year producing smartphones.

Redmi Note 9 Pro

The Note 9 Pro retails in two variants, one with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage (in glacier white, interstellar grey or tropical green), and one with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage (in interstellar grey). These variants retail at £249 and £269 respectively.

The phone runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chipset, and has a 5,020mAh battery with 30W fast charging. It has a 6.67-inch display, and its front and back are covered in Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

It comes with a quad-camera setup, including a 64MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 5MP macro lens and a 2MP depth sensor. It also is able to shoot in cinematic portrait mode with a 2.39:1 aspect ratio, which adds cinematic black bars to portrait shots. It has a 16MP front camera.

The 64GB storage variant will be available on Amazon from June 8, with a presale on June 3, while the 128GB version will be available on Amazon and Mi.com from June 19.

The Redmi Note 9 will also retail in two variants, one with 3GB RAM and 64GB storage, and one with 4GB RAM and 128GB storage. These versions will retail at £179 and £199 respectively.

It runs on a MediaTek Helio G85 chipset, and also has a 5,020mAh battery, although it only has 18W charging. It has an 6.53-inch display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

The Note 9 also has a quad-camera setup, with a 48MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 2MP macro lens and a 2MP depth sensor. It has a 13MP front camera.

Both versions will be available on Amazon and Mi.com from late June.

According to Gartner, Xiaomi was the only one of the top five global smartphone manufacturers to see year-on-year growth in Q1 2020, weathering the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the market.

Additionally, Xiaomi’s Redmi 8 and Redmi Note 8 were the second and fourth-best selling Android phones worldwide in Q1 2020, according to Strategy Analytics.

In a video launching the new devices, Xiaomi cited Canalys statistics that showed it had increased its global shipments from 27.8 million to 30.2 million year-on-year in Q1 2020.
