Vendor plans to develop 5.5G to propel IoT, energy-saving and self-driving vehicle tech

Huawei plans to shift emphasis away from hardware manufacture to software over the next 10 years.

The strategic company shift was announced at its 18th Global Analyst Summit on Monday.

Huawei’s mission is to boost business resilience by investing massively in software capabilities and components for intelligent vehicles, and innovations to reduce global energy consumption.

President of Huawei’s Institute of Strategic Research, William Xu noted nine technological challenges and proposed directions for research efforts including developing 5G to support hundreds of billions of different kinds of connections, developing nanoscale optics to increase fibre capacity and achieve speeds of 100Gb.

He also revealed plans to work on technology that can increase storage by 10,000 per cent, building advanced health monitoring systems, building an intelligent Internet of Energy for the generation, storage, and consumption of greener electricity.

“We hope to join forces with different industries, academia, research institutes, and application developers to address the universal challenges facing humanity. We all have a role to play as we explore how to make connections stronger, computing faster, and energy greener.”
