Reports in Taiwanese media claim the manufacturer’s new division will focus mainly on VR on the back of the success of the Vive headset
HTC has created a new division to deal with future tech, according to reports in Taiwan.

he manufacturer claims the new division will develop new technology and business lines, but some reports claim it will focus primarily on virtual reality, following the launch of HTC’s Vive headset.
The Vive, which was on display at this year’s Mobile World Congress, was made available for pre-order at the end of February. In a tweet, HTC said it had received more than 15,000 pre-orders in the first ten minutes, worth more than $12 million in revenue.
CEO and co-founder Cher Wang will become chairwoman of the newly formed unit, while her co-founder Cho Ho-Tu will also take a seat on the board.
HTC 10 on sale
It comes as HTC’s latest flagship, the HTC 10, went on sale in the UK today (May 6).
The 10, a follow up to the HTC One M9, was launched last month. The new handset comes with a 12MP camera designed to launch in 0.6 seconds. It also has a DxOMark score of 88. This is a camera benchmark used to rate the quality of cameras.
The 10 holds one of the highest quality camera scores of any smartphone to date. 4K video can also be captured alongside audio, which HTC says has 256 times more detail than regular audio files.
The 10’s body is constructed from metal and the Taiwanese manufacturer claims the phone can handle temperatures ranging between -20 and 60 degrees celsius. It has also been subjected to over 10,000 drop, bend, scratch and corrosion tests. A 5.2-inch Quad HD screen.
A fingerprint scanner is also included, which unlocks the phone in 0.2 seconds. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor allows it to consume less power, optimise memory more effectively and improve battery life, claims HTC.
It is available through Three, EE and Carphone Warehouse. HTC was unavailable for comment about the new business unit.
