Jersey Telecom (JT) has activated the first sites on its 5G Standalone mobile network.
The new network, developed with a focus on adaptability, aims to support not only current usage but future demand surges and evolving digital services. JT’s ambition, , is to enable “seamless connectivity on the ground and in the air.”
The switch-on follows a multi-million-pound infrastructure upgrade delivered in partnership with Ericsson. JT’s phased rollout of the new network, is expected to be fully deployed by the end of the year.
The migration from the legacy network to the 5G SA infrastructure was coordinated with Ericsson’s Global Network Operations Centre. Early performance data indicates improvements in signal strength, coverage, and average download speeds.

“This advanced infrastructure will not only mean faster and more reliable connections, but also support new devices, services and business models that will position the Channel Islands as a global hub for innovation,” said Katherine Ainley, CEO of Ericsson UK and Ireland.
The launch event at JT’s Network Operation Centre was attended by Jersey’s Chief Minister Deputy Lyndon Farnham (below l) and Minister for Sustainable Economic Development Deputy Kirsten Morel.

Morel said the network would “enhance connectivity and support emerging technologies,” calling it a vital enabler for innovation and productivity in sectors grappling with the challenges of ageing populations and economic transition.
JT is awaiting regulatory approval there to expand its 5G services in Guernsey and across the islands. JerseyTelecom reckons Jersey as one of the most connected regions in Europe.
The company was among the first to deliver island-wide full-fibre broadband It also operates internationally and supports over 135 million users with fraud prevention and identity verification tools.
