Nokia licencee passes 1,000-update milestone in past three years across all smartphones
HMD Global has revealed its projected rollout for Android 11 across its Nokia smartphones, with the new Nokia 8.3 5G and the Nokia 5.3 set to be the first to get the new software in Q4 of this year.
They will be followed by the Nokia 2.2 and Nokia 8.1 this year, with the rest of HMD’s Android 11-ready Nokia smartphones receiving the update in Q1 and Q2 of 2021.
“Upgrading the operating system of a phone is an intricate process involving multiple partners and a variety of tests,” said HMD’s chief product officer Juho Sarvikas. “We are hugely proud of the industry-leading process we have in place for Nokia smartphones and continue to make it a key priority of ours to ensure our customers benefit from the latest Android innovation ahead of competition in every price point.”
HMD also confirmed that with the Nokia 3.1 and 5.1 smartphones getting an update to Android 10 this week, it has successfully rolled out Android 10 to all of its Android 10-capable smartphones.
Additionally, it has implemented its 1,000th software update in the past three years. According to research from Counterpoint Research last year, HMD is the fastest manufacturer to upgrade its smartphone portfolios to the latest iteration of Android.
Within a year of the launch of Android 9 in 2018, Nokia had issued the most recent software updates to 94 per cent of its portfolio.
