CPW raids M&S for new UK MD

Carphone Warehouse has also appointed former Marks and Spencer international operations director Matt Stringer as its new UK managing director.

Stringer’s role at Carphone is newly-created, and sees the firm replicate management structure in other European countries in its home market. Stringer will report into Andrew Harrison, chief executive of Carphone and its Phone House retail operation on the continent.

Stringer was with Marks and Spencer for 15 years in a number of roles.

Harrison said: “After searching far and wide, we have found a highly talented and respected retailer in Matt Stringer. He is a great cultural fit as he strongly believes in doing the right thing for customers. He has all the skiills to deliver our vision of a ‘connected world’.”

Also, Carphone has promoted Steve Blan from UK retail and customer director to Europe retail director. Blan has been instructed to replicate UK best-practice and store profitability across all its eight European markets. Blan also reports into Harrison.

Harrison said: “Steve’s work through his tenure has as UK retail director resulted in our highest ever engagement, service scores and financial results.

“Steve will now support me in delivering the work he has done so successfully in the UK across the rest of our European markets. He will still play a significant role in the development of our retail business in the UK but will get the chance to affect our business now on a wider scale.”

Meanwhile, chief commercial officer Graham Stapleton takes on a wider enterprise role as well, handling all purchasing and trade activity across Carphone Warehouse, Phone House and Best Buy, and for implementing synergies across the three.

His UK trading responsibilities are handed to commercial director Mark Eastham, who takes the role of UK trading director, and charge of all manufacturer and network relationships in the UK. Eastham joined Carphone in 2003 as head of cellular.

Stapleton remarked: “This has to be one of the most populat promotions we have seen. Mark was always best candidate for the role. He will help the business achieve greater success.”
